A Beginnerโ€™s Guide to Shopping at CVS

If you are new to couponing at CVS, the “lingo” can sometimes feel like a foreign language. However, once you understand the basic framework, it is one of the most rewarding stores to shop at. Here is a quick guide to help you stay grounded in your savings strategy.

What are ExtraBucks (ECB)?

Think of ExtraBucks as “CVS Money.” It is a reward printed at the bottom of your receipt (or sent to your digital account) immediately after you purchase a qualifying item. For example, if a deal says “Buy 2, Get $5 ExtraBucks,” you will receive a coupon worth $5 off your next shopping trip as soon as you pay.

  • Pro Tip: You can use ExtraBucks to pay for other deals! This is called “rolling” your rewards. Ideally, you want to pay with the ExtraBucks you earned last week to keep your out-of-pocket cost near zero.

The Magic of “Stacking”

The secret to the deals listed above is stacking. CVS allows you to use one Manufacturer Coupon (MFR) and one Store Coupon (CVS Coupon) per item.

  • Manufacturer Coupons: These come from the Sunday newspaper inserts or the CVS app (labeled “MFR”).
  • Store Coupons (CRTs): These are “Cash Register Tapes” or personalized coupons found in the CVS app or printed at the RedBox kiosk in-store. They usually look like “$3 off $12 Cosmetics.”
  • The Math: If you have a $3 off $12 Cosmetics store coupon and a $2 Manufacturer coupon for mascara, you can use both on the same item.

The 98% Rule

CVS has a famously helpful policy known among couponers as the “98% Rule.” If a deal requires you to “Spend $20 to get $5 ExtraBucks,” you do not actually have to hit $20.00 exactly. As long as your total reaches 98% of the requirement (which would be $19.60), the ExtraBucks will still print. This allows you to use coupons without stressing over a few cents.

Using the CVS App

To get the deals I list on Grounded in Thyme, you absolutely need the CVS Pharmacy app. Before you head to the store:

  1. Log in and link your ExtraCare card.
  2. Go to “Deals & Rewards.”
  3. Click the + (plus) sign next to every digital coupon mentioned in my list. This sends the coupon to your card so it applies automatically at checkout.

Disclaimer: Deals and inventory may vary by region. Always check your local weekly ad and the specific coupons in your account, as personalized store coupons vary from user to user.
