iPhone Setting Makes Unknown Callers Explain Why They’re Calling

Does anyone else immediately become suspicious when an unknown phone number appears on their screen?

Is it the doctor’s office? The school? A delivery driver? Someone calling about an appointment? Or is it another person trying to sell me an extended car warranty for a vehicle I no longer own?

For the longest time, I had two choices: answer the call and hope for the best, or ignore it and possibly miss something important.

Then I discovered the iPhone’s Ask Reason for Calling feature—and honestly, it has been amazing.

When someone calls from a number that is not saved in my contacts, my iPhone asks the caller to provide more information before my phone rings. Once the caller gives their name and explains why they are calling, I can see that information and decide whether I want to answer.

No more answering the phone and immediately regretting it.

No more sitting through a sales pitch because I accidentally said hello.

And no more ignoring every unfamiliar number and wondering whether I just missed an important call.

What Is “Ask Reason for Calling” on the iPhone?

Ask Reason for Calling is part of the iPhone’s call-screening feature. It is available on iPhones using iOS 26.

When the feature is turned on, calls from unknown or unsaved numbers are answered quietly by the iPhone before the phone rings. The caller is asked to identify themselves and say why they are calling.

After the caller responds, your iPhone rings and displays the information they provided. You can then decide whether to answer, decline the call or let it go to voicemail.

Calls from people already saved in your contacts should continue to ring normally. Apple explains that calls from unknown numbers are screened without interrupting you, and your phone rings after the caller shares their name and reason for calling.

How to Turn On “Ask Reason for Calling”

The setting only takes a minute to activate.

Step 1: Make Sure Your iPhone Is Updated

First, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 26 or a later compatible version.

To check:

Open the Settings app.
Tap General.
Tap Software Update.
Install any available update.

Before installing a major update, it is always a good idea to make sure your phone is backed up and connected to Wi-Fi and a charger.

Step 2: Open Your Phone Settings

Once your iPhone is updated, open the Settings app.

Scroll down and tap Apps.

Apple moved many individual app settings into this section, so you may need to scroll farther than expected.

Step 3: Select the Phone App

Inside the Apps section, scroll through the list and tap Phone.

You can also use the search box at the top of the Apps page and type “Phone” to find it more quickly.

Step 4: Find “Screen Unknown Callers”

Scroll through the Phone settings until you find the section labeled Screen Unknown Callers.

Tap it to see the available choices.

Step 5: Choose “Ask Reason for Calling”

You should see three options:

Never
Ask Reason for Calling
Silence

Select Ask Reason for Calling.

That’s it. There is no additional app to install and no monthly fee to pay.

The full path is:

Settings → Apps → Phone → Screen Unknown Callers → Ask Reason for Calling

Apple confirms that selecting this option requires unknown callers to provide more information before the iPhone rings.

What Do the Other Options Mean?

While you are changing the setting, you will notice two other choices.

Never

Selecting Never turns off call screening. Calls from unsaved numbers will ring normally, just like they did before.

Silence

Selecting Silence prevents calls from unsaved numbers from ringing. Instead, they are sent to voicemail and still appear in your recent calls.

Silencing unknown callers can be helpful if you receive constant spam, but it may also cause you to miss legitimate calls from medical offices, businesses, delivery drivers, contractors or other people who are not yet saved in your phone.

That is why I prefer Ask Reason for Calling. It gives legitimate callers an opportunity to explain themselves without allowing every random number to interrupt my day.

Why This Feature Has Been So Helpful

This setting gives me information before I decide whether the call deserves my attention.

For example, instead of seeing only an unfamiliar number, I may see that the caller is from a doctor’s office confirming an appointment. I can answer immediately.

On the other hand, if the caller gives a vague answer, refuses to identify themselves or disconnects when asked why they are calling, I probably did not need to answer anyway.

It is especially useful when you are expecting calls from companies that may use multiple outgoing phone numbers. Contractors, repair companies, insurance offices, pharmacies and medical practices do not always call from a number you recognize.

The feature creates a helpful middle ground between answering everything and silencing everyone.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

This feature works best when you keep your contacts updated. Once you know a legitimate caller, save their number so future calls can ring normally.

You should also remember that no screening tool can guarantee that every caller is being honest. Scammers may still provide false information, so never share passwords, verification codes, Social Security numbers, banking information or other sensitive details with an unexpected caller.

When in doubt, hang up and call the organization back using a trusted number from its official website, your statement or the back of your card.

One of the Best iPhone Settings I Have Found

I am genuinely surprised more people are not talking about this feature.

All calls from unsaved numbers are asked for more information before my iPhone rings, which means I finally have a little context before deciding whether to answer.

It does not completely eliminate unwanted calls, but it makes them much easier to manage.

Go to:

Settings → Apps → Phone → Screen Unknown Callers → Ask Reason for Calling

Turn it on and let your iPhone ask the awkward question for you: “Who are you, and what do you want?”

Because some days, I simply do not have the time—or the patience—to find out the hard way.
