Easy Shepherds Pie with Bistro Gravy Mix (Rich, Hearty, Family Favorite)
One of the all-time favorite dinners in our house is this Easy Shepherds Pie — but not just any Shepherd’s Pie. This one comes with my husband’s “secret ingredient.”
And yes, you read that right… I don’t make this dish. He does.
Every single time he makes it, it disappears. No leftovers. No complaints. Just happy plates all around.
His not-so-secret secret? Bistro Gravy Mix.
It’s the simple shortcut that gives the filling that deep, rich, slow-simmered flavor without standing over the stove all night. And somehow, when he makes it, it just tastes better. (I’ve accepted my role here. I handle the mashed potatoes. He handles the magic.) 🍀
For true “Shepherd’s Pie,” you can use ground lamb. In our house we use ground beef. Feel free to swap the ground beef in this recipe for ground lamb.

Easy Shepherd’s Pie with Bistro Gravy Mix
Ingredients
- For the Mashed Potato Topping:
- 2½ lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes peeled and chopped
- 4 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup milk more if needed
- Salt to taste
- Optional: ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar
- For the Filling:
- 1 lb ground hamburger
- 1 small onion diced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 cup frozen carrots
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 packet bistro brown gravy mix
- 1 cup water or beef broth for extra depth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Make the Mashed Potatoes
- Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (about 15 minutes). Drain well.
- Mash with butter, milk, and salt until smooth and fluffy. Set aside.
- (Pro tip: slightly thicker mashed potatoes work best so they hold their shape on top.)
- Make the Filling
- Preheat oven to 400°F.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground lamb until browned. Drain excess grease if needed.
- Add onion and cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook another 30 seconds.
- Mix in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the bistro gravy mix and water (or broth). Pour into the skillet and simmer 3–5 minutes until thickened.
- Stir in peas and carrots. The mixture should be thick and rich — not soupy.
- Assemble
- Spread the meat mixture evenly into a baking dish (or keep it in an oven-safe skillet).
- Spoon mashed potatoes over the top and gently spread. Use a fork to create little ridges — those golden peaks are everything.
- If using cheese, sprinkle over the top.
- Bake
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbling around the edges and golden on top.
- For extra browning, broil for the last 2–3 minutes (watch carefully).
- Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.
Notes
We use ready made mash potatoes.
This saves time and we still love the taste.
