Copycat McDonald's Shamrock Shake Recipe

Copycat McDonald's Shamrock Shake

Prep Time: 5-10 minutes Total Time: 10-20 minutes (including softening ice cream) Servings: 2 Yield: About 2½–3 cups (2 large shakes)
Serving Size 4

Ingredients

  • 2 –2½ cups vanilla ice cream high-quality for best flavor; about 1 pint
  • ½ –⅔ cup whole milk adjust for desired thickness—start with less for thicker shake
  • ¼ –½ teaspoon peppermint extract start low; peppermint, not mint, to avoid toothpaste taste
  • 5 –9 drops green food coloring liquid works best; adjust for your preferred shade of green
  • Whipped cream for topping
  • Maraschino cherries for garnish (optional)
  • Optional extras: green sprinkles chocolate syrup drizzle in the glass, or a pinch of salt for balance

Instructions

  • Let the vanilla ice cream soften at room temperature for 10–15 minutes until scoopable (this makes blending easier and reduces needed milk).
  • Add the softened ice cream, milk, peppermint extract, and green food coloring to a blender.
  • Blend on low to medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 30–60 seconds. Scrape down sides if needed. Add a splash more milk if too thick.
  • (Optional) For a fun presentation, drizzle chocolate syrup inside chilled glasses before pouring.
  • Pour the shake into tall glasses. Top generously with whipped cream, add a cherry (and sprinkles if using), and serve immediately with a straw.

Notes

Use whole milk for the richest, creamiest texture—lower-fat options work but may be thinner.
Peppermint extract strength varies by brand; taste and add more if needed, but go slow!
For a fluffier shake, use a food processor instead of a blender.
Make it ahead? Blend and store in freezer briefly, but it’s best fresh.
Customize: Skip food coloring for a natural look, or add spinach/banana for a "healthy" twist (though not classic).
Perfect for St. Patrick's Day or anytime you crave that minty fast-food nostalgia!
