In a medium saucepan, whisk together ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder and ⅓ cup granulated sugar until well combined (no lumps).
Gradually whisk in about 1 cup of the 4 cups of milk to create a smooth paste—this helps avoid clumps.
Add the remaining 3 cups of milk and stir.
Place the saucepan over medium heat. Whisk occasionally and heat until the mixture is hot and steaming (about 5 minutes)—do not let it boil.
Remove from heat and stir in ½ teaspoon vanilla extract.
