Homemade Taco Seasoning Dry Mix (Better Than the Packet!)

This easy blend makes the equivalent of 6 store-bought packets (about 1 cup total). Use 2–3 Tbsp per pound of meat—just like the packets! Prep Time: 5 minutes Total Time: 5 minutes Servings: 24 (2 Tbsp each) Yield: ~1 cup

Ingredients

  • ½ cup chili powder mild or medium
  • ¼ cup ground cumin
  • 2 Tbsp kosher salt or 1½ Tbsp table salt
  • 2 Tbsp paprika regular or smoked for extra flavor
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp onion powder
  • 1 Tbsp dried oregano
  • 2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 –2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes optional, for heat
  • 1 tsp cornstarch optional – helps thicken sauces

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a bowl and whisk until completely blended.
  • Transfer to an airtight jar or spice container.
  • Store in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months (flavor stays strong).
  • To use: Brown 1 lb meat, drain fat if needed, add 2–3 Tbsp seasoning + ⅔ cup water. Simmer until thickened

Notes

Mild version – Skip red pepper flakes.
Extra smoky – Use smoked paprika.
Low-sodium – Reduce salt to 1 Tbsp or omit and salt meat separately.
Gluten-free & vegan – Naturally yes!
Perfect for tacos, fajitas, ground beef, chicken, beans, roasted veggies, or popcorn seasoning.
