Homemade Laundry Soap for a Thoughtful DIY Holiday Gift
Homemade Laundry Soap for a Thoughtful DIY Holiday Gift – Some holiday gifts are pretty. Some are practical. And some manage to be both—with a jar, a little ribbon, and something that helps with the never-ending laundry pile.
Homemade laundry soap makes a thoughtful addition to a laundry-themed gift basket for someone who enjoys handmade household products. Pair it with a few useful laundry essentials, tuck everything into a reusable basket, and you have a gift that earns its space in the house.
Will it fold the clothes? Unfortunately, no. We’re crafty, but we haven’t reached that level yet.
Before You Make Laundry Soap for Gifting
A homemade soap blend is different from a commercially formulated laundry detergent. This recipe is not tested or certified for HE machines. Check the recipient’s washer instructions before making it; if the machine requires HE detergent, use a sealed HE detergent in the basket instead.
Whirlpool explains that HE washers require detergent designed for low-water washing and recommends looking for the HE symbol on the packaging. Source: Whirlpool
For a homemade blend, test a small batch in your own compatible machine before gifting. Water hardness, soap choice, wash temperature, and fabric type can affect the results. Avoid claiming that a homemade recipe is safe for every washer, hypoallergenic, or suitable for every fabric.
Simple Homemade Powdered Laundry Soap
This dry blend is easy to package without making a large bucket of liquid soap. Keep it fragrance-free by choosing an unscented laundry bar and leaving out added scents.
Preparation time: About 15 minutes
Yield: Approximately 3–4 cups, depending on the grated soap’s volume
Packaging: One quart-size jar with room to stir, or divide between smaller jars
Ingredients
- 1 laundry soap bar, approximately 4–5 ounces, finely grated
- 1 cup washing soda—not baking soda
- 1 cup borax
Use a bar intended for laundry, rather than a moisturizing bath bar. Choose products with labels and directions you can include with the gift.
Supplies
- Grater
- Large mixing bowl and spoon
- Measuring cup
- Completely dry, airtight container
- Label and a dedicated measuring scoop

Instructions
- Grate the laundry bar finely. Smaller shavings are easier to distribute through the powder.
- Combine the ingredients. Gently stir the soap, washing soda, and borax until evenly mixed. Avoid raising or breathing the powder dust, and follow each ingredient’s handling directions.
- Transfer to a dry container. Leave a little space so the mixture can be stirred if the ingredients settle.
- Label immediately. Include the ingredients, preparation date, use directions, and washer limitation.
How to Use
For a conventional washer whose instructions permit this type of blend, start with 1 tablespoon for a small, lightly soiled load. Test the results before considering up to 2 tablespoons for a larger load. These are starting amounts, not a validated dose for every machine or water condition.
Follow the washer’s directions for adding powder. Do not put this mixture in an automatic liquid detergent reservoir. If soap flecks remain, clothes feel coated, or cleaning is poor, stop using it and switch to a detergent suited to the machine and water conditions.
Use only on washable fabrics whose care labels permit the ingredients. Skip wool, silk, and other delicate or specialty fabrics.
Storage
Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place, away from children and pets. Use a dry scoop and stir gently before measuring if the ingredients settle. Follow the original ingredient labels; there is no tested shelf life for this homemade mixture.
What to Put in a Laundry Gift Basket
Choose a few things the recipient will actually use. The basket doesn’t need to be overflowing to feel thoughtful.
Wool Dryer Balls
A small set fits neatly beside the laundry soap. Include the manufacturer’s instructions and leave them unscented.
Mesh Laundry Bags
These are handy for washable delicates and small items. A set of two or three makes an easy addition without taking up much space.
A Stain Treatment Bar
Choose a commercially labeled laundry stain bar and keep its original directions attached. A small dish or storage tin makes it feel like part of the set.
A Lint Roller
A useful addition for households with pets—or anyone who wears black and immediately regrets sitting on the couch.
A Measuring Scoop
Include a scoop with a clearly marked capacity. A cute wooden scoop works only if you know how much it holds; an actual tablespoon measure makes the directions easier to follow.
Clothespins and a Cotton Bag
For someone who air-dries laundry, add clothespins in a reusable drawstring bag. You can personalize the bag with a simple laundry-themed design.
A Folding-Day Treat
A sealed tea packet and a separately wrapped snack add a little fun. Keep food physically separate from laundry products, ideally in its own sealed pouch or box.
Three Easy Laundry Gift Basket Ideas
The Simple Laundry Day Gift
- A small jar of homemade laundry soap, if compatible with the recipient’s washer
- A marked measuring scoop
- A mesh laundry bag
- A reusable fabric bin
Tie a ribbon around the jar and tuck the directions into the mesh bag. Simple, useful, and easy to assemble.
The Fresh Start Basket
- Homemade laundry soap or a sealed detergent suited to the recipient’s machine
- Wool dryer balls
- A stain treatment bar
- A lint roller
- A small laundry basket
This is a nice option for someone setting up a home or someone who enjoys practical gifts.
The Laundry Day Break Basket
- Laundry soap or compatible packaged detergent
- A mesh laundry bag
- Wool dryer balls
- A mug and sealed tea packets
- A separately packaged treat
Attach a tag that says: A little help for laundry day—and a little break for you.
How to Make It Look Like a Holiday Gift
Use a small laundry basket, fabric storage bin, or sturdy handled basket as the base. Line it with a folded cotton towel that can become part of the gift.
Place the jar upright toward the back and arrange smaller items in front. Add a cranberry-red ribbon, a plaid bow, or a simple paper tag. Keep decorations outside the laundry soap container.
Skip essential oils, loose herbs, and dried flowers in the mixture. Let the wrapping provide the holiday theme while keeping the laundry products simple.

HOMEMADE LAUNDRY SOAP
Made with laundry bar soap, washing soda, and borax.
Prepared on: __________
For compatible conventional washers only. Not tested for HE machines. Check washer and fabric care instructions before use. Start with 1 tablespoon for a small, lightly soiled load; test results before increasing. Stir gently before measuring. Store tightly closed and dry. Not food. Keep away from children and pets. Follow ingredient precautions on the attached card.
Include the laundry bar’s brand and full ingredient information, along with the original products’ safety directions, on a separate card. Don’t label the blend “unscented” unless all ingredients are unscented.
A Handmade Gift That Helps With Everyday Life
A laundry basket gift is a small way to make an everyday chore feel a little more cared for. Choose a few useful extras, add clear directions, and wrap it with the recipient in mind.
And if someone figures out how to put a laundry-folding fairy in the basket, please save one for the rest of us.
