Summer Cleaning Checklist: Simple Things to Tackle Before Life Gets Busy
I love to get my Summer Cleaning Checklist out of the way early because summer always feels like a fresh start.
The windows are open, the days are longer, and somehow every member of my family suddenly spends half their life tracking dirt, grass, sand, and mystery crumbs through the house.
While spring cleaning gets all the attention, I actually think summer is the perfect time to tackle a few simple cleaning projects. Not the overwhelming, spend-an-entire-weekend-scrubbing-everything kind of cleaning. I’m talking about the practical stuff that helps your home feel fresh, organized, and easier to maintain during one of the busiest seasons of the year.
Because let’s be honest…
Between vacations, cookouts, baseball games, gardening, pool days, and trying to enjoy the nice weather before winter inevitably returns, nobody wants to spend every weekend cleaning.
That’s why I like to do a quick summer reset.
My Summer Cleaning Checklist
Wash Windows and Screens
Nothing makes a house feel brighter than clean windows.
Over the winter and spring, windows collect dust, pollen, fingerprints, and whatever else Mother Nature decides to throw at them.
Take a little time to:
- Clean interior windows
- Wash exterior windows
- Wipe down window tracks
- Remove and rinse window screens
You’ll be amazed how much more sunlight comes in afterward.
Clean Ceiling Fans
If you’re anything like me, you probably turn on the ceiling fan for the first hot day of the year and instantly remember that dust exists.
Before summer temperatures really kick in:
- Dust fan blades
- Wipe light fixtures
- Check for wobbling or loose screws
Trust me on this one. It’s much better than getting dust showered onto your freshly made bed.
Deep Clean Outdoor Furniture
Patio furniture takes a beating during the off-season.
Give everything a quick refresh:
- Wash chairs and tables
- Wipe cushions
- Remove mildew spots
- Clean outdoor rugs
Your future self enjoying an iced drink outside will thank you.
Freshen Up Entryways
Summer means more traffic coming in and out of the house.
And more traffic means more dirt.
Take a few minutes to:
- Shake out doormats
- Vacuum entry rugs
- Wipe baseboards
- Organize shoes and sandals
A clean entryway helps stop the mess before it spreads through the entire house.
Clean the Refrigerator
Summer means fresh produce, cookout leftovers, popsicles, and all kinds of food getting shoved into the fridge.
This is the perfect time to:
- Toss expired items
- Wipe shelves
- Clean drawers
- Vacuum refrigerator coils if accessible
Bonus points if you can find that container hiding in the back before it becomes a science experiment.
Check Air Vents and Filters
One of the easiest things to forget is also one of the most important.
Make sure to:
- Replace HVAC filters
- Vacuum vents
- Dust return air grilles
Clean filters help your system run more efficiently during those hot summer months.
Refresh Bedding
Summer is a great time to lighten things up.
Wash:
- Comforters
- Mattress protectors
- Pillow protectors
- Decorative pillows
Consider switching to lighter bedding to help keep everyone comfortable on warm nights.
Clean Out the Pantry
I love doing a pantry cleanout before summer.
It helps me:
- Find ingredients I forgot I had
- Remove expired products
- Make room for summer snacks
- Organize quick meal supplies
Plus, it saves money when I actually use what I already own.
Tackle Outdoor Spaces
Don’t forget the areas outside your home.
Summer cleaning should include:
- Sweeping porches
- Cleaning grills
- Washing outdoor toys
- Cleaning gardening tools
- Clearing cobwebs from exterior corners
A little effort goes a long way toward making outdoor spaces more enjoyable.
Declutter Before Vacation Season
One of my favorite summer cleaning tips isn’t really cleaning at all.
It’s decluttering.
Spend 15 minutes each day tackling:
- Junk drawers
- Bathroom cabinets
- Linen closets
- Overflow baskets
- Random piles that seem to reproduce overnight
Small progress adds up quickly.
Don’t Try to Do It All at Once
This is probably the most important item on the entire checklist.
You do not need to finish everything in a single weekend.
In fact, I recommend doing the opposite.
Pick one or two projects each week and work through the list slowly. Summer should be enjoyed, not spent scrubbing every square inch of your house.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is creating a home that feels fresh, functional, and ready for all the memories summer brings.
And if you’re anything like me, there will still be a random basket sitting on the counter that nobody knows what to do with.
That’s okay too.
Progress over perfection every single time.
